Rev. Revenel Benoit

On Sunday, June 6th, we had a special guest in all of our worship services. Pastor Revenel Benoit, the President of the Lutheran Church of Haiti brought greetings from the Lutherans of Haiti to the people of Shepherd of the Coast. He also shared his personal journey of faith during our Bible class hour.
Pastor Benoit’s testimony was powerful and compelling. I wanted to share it with you in this newsletter because I think you will find encouragement in your faith from seeing what God did in his life.
Pastor Benoit is the son of a Voodoo Priestess. Voodoo is a religion that developed when African slaves were “converted” to Roman Catholicism by their French masters in Haiti. The French believed that the slaves were not human until they were baptized. But, many slaves simply transferred the basic tenets of the beliefs they brought with them from Africa into a “Christian” context. As a result in Voodoo, the Apostles, Virgin Mary, and many of the Saints have the characteristics of the gods of the African faith.
Voodoo is a religion that is based on appeasing evil spirits, usually with animal sacrifices, and manipulating the gods and spirits by various rituals. Pastor Benoit described Voodoo as, “without any joy or peace.”
When Pastor Benoit was in his teens, he heard a Christian radio program. The speaker on that program talked about the joy of forgiveness and the peace that Christ made with God through His sacrifice on the cross. Pastor Benoit sought out this radio preacher and spoke with him about the faith. At the end of their conversation, Pastor Benoit asked this man to pray for him. When the man finished his prayer, Pastor Benoit said that he immediately felt the joy and peace of Christ fill his heart by faith. It was a profound moment for Pastor Benoit.
When he went home, his mother met him at the door and informed him that an evil spirit had told her of Revenel’s conversion to Christianity. She then threw her son out of the house and cut all ties to him. Pastor Benoit was now homeless.
God provided for Pastor Benoit by bringing a Catholic priest into his life who took an interest in his needs. This priest provided for Revenel’s education and found shelter for him. After five years of schooling, Pastor Benoit came to the United States on a visitor’s visa and met a group of Haitian men who were studying for the ministry at (then) Peace Lutheran Church. Revenel sat in on one class that was being taught by the late Pastor Mark Bergmann. Pastor Bergmann invited Revenel to his confirmation class and he was confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in 1985.
Pastor Bergmann also made it possible for Revenel to study for the ministry at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana. During his three years of study at the Seminary, Revenel was determined to create a self-sufficient Lutheran Church in Haiti. His wife studied computer technology at that time and they began acquiring used AT computers with the hope of opening a computer school as a part of their church plant in Haiti.
In 1994, when Pastor Benoit was ordained, the political situation in Haiti was very unstable. Haitian friends counseled him to remain in the United States to do work among the Haitian community here, but Revnel was resolute in his calling to the people of Haiti.
Pastor Benoit planted a Lutheran Church in Gonaives, Haiti (north of Port-au-Prince). The Church also operated a computer school that enabled graduates to find government jobs. That Church continued to plant additional churches and today there are 192 Lutheran Churches in Haiti and 100 Lutheran schools.
The goal of self-sufficiency has been a hallmark of Pastor Benoit’s work in Haiti. It is his hope that by December 15, 2011, the Lutheran Church of Haiti will be completely financially independent of the North American Church that has supported their work for the past 15 years.
Pastor Benoit encouraged us to be a part of a mission team to Haiti. He feels that this is the most powerful witness and aid that we can offer to the people of Haiti. Mission: Haiti is headquartered in Broward County and helps to coordinate mission teams to Haiti.
I hope that you find Pastor Benoit’s story encouraging to your faith.
            In Christ,
            Pastor Dan

Building Program Update
Building Together to Serve
Year 2 – Finish the Job

By the time you receive this, Phase II of our building program should be making visible progress. We received what we believed was our permitting for this project on May 11th. We soon discovered that there were more permits involved than we initially thought. Cogun has successfully navigated the labyrinth of the Fort Lauderdale Building Department and the project is moving forward.
The first step in this process is to construct a “silt fence” around the site of the new addition. This silt fence will make it impossible for us to use our east parking (basketball court). On Sunday morning you will need to use the angle parking along the front of the Church, the parking lot to the west of the building, and the parking to the north of the building (outside of the fence).
After the silt fence is in place to protect the environment, footers will be dug and the foundation laid. Of course, the existing asphalt will first need to be removed and we will no longer have use of that area for parking or children.
The sanctuary continues to make progress. The painting is nearly complete and laying tile in the chancel will be the next step. The tile needs to be complete before any of the new chancel furnishings. The items that have been funded, along with dedications, and those that are yet to be funded are listed below.
The Church Council has decided to name the new sanctuary Founders Chapel in honor of the three pastors who founded Grace, Hope, and Peace Lutheran Churches: Pastor Roy Guelzow, Pastor Elmer C.  Kieninger, and Pastor Alfred Luhmann. It is our hope that representatives of the family can be present when we dedicate the new building.
Furnishings for Founders Chapel: Altar (in memory of Richard and Elma Sue Hedelund ), Altar Candles (in memory of Otho H. Huff), Ambo (in memory of Ruth Hansen), Candle Sconces, Candle Stands and Followers (presented by Sonia Rudge), Apse cross (in memory of Fred T. Hedelund), Baptismal Font (in memory of Glenn Caccamise), Credence Table (presented by anonymous donation), Communion Rail (in memory of Rae Estelle Anderson), Communion Rail (in memory of loved ones, presented by the Zapata Family), Kneelers (memorial – Pastor A. James Laughlin), Kneelers (presented by Mabel Bluhm and Janet Bluhm), Kneelers (in memory of Alberta Clark and Beverly Frenzel), Kneelers (in memory of Walther T. Hanser), Kneelers (in memory of Fred & Edan Leonard), Seating (presented by Mabel Bluhm and Janet Bluhm), Seating presented by the Korcok Family), Sound System (presented by Lois Bowen), Sound System (presented by Sonia Rudge).
Furnishings partially funded: Seating (170), $125/per item, 16 purchased; Kneelers, $50/per item, 9 purchased; Sound System, ($12,000) Received $4,250;
Furnishings remaining to be funded: Paraments (6) $1,100/per item

Early Childhood News

Our summer is quickly passing by. We have 49 children attending our summer early childhood center. Our children are enjoying the change in pace that we use for summer time. We get to attempt new outdoor activities and experience different classroom activities as well!
When I think back to last summer I have to smile, and say we’ve come a long way.   It is extremely wonderful having all children and teaching staff under one roof. We are able to work together, play and enjoy combined activities now that we are in the same building. The Early Childhood teachers, families and children are very happy to have such a wonderful new building to continue to learn and grow in Christ. We ask you to continue to pray for Shepherd of the Coast as we move forward to spreading God’s word to the community.
We are in the process of enrolling children for the new school year that begins in August. We have openings for Infants through three year olds. If you know of a family that is looking for a safe, loving, nurturing and Christ centered school, pass our name on to them!

Summer Jesus And Me (Sunday school) - 9:30 am

Wow what a great response we are enjoying with the J.A.M. children. Miss Nikki is doing a great job with the children that are attending. We challenge all that are ages 3 years old to 5th grade to join us this summer as we explore “The Many Miracles of Jesus”. Come grow with us as we explore God’s word.

Elementary and Middle School News

We completed our post-term faculty meetings and I want you to know how excited I am about the 2010-2011 school year! We are moving forward on articulating a clear and focused vision for the school.
Our vision is organized in three parts. Shepherd of the Coast Christian School is…
Christ-Centered – Christ shapes our values
Relationship-Focused – Relationships are nurtured and guide our life together
Project-Based – Engaging learning activities drive our curriculum
We will be fleshing out these ideas in the coming month and “unveil” the new vision with the new school year. This vision will then be the basis for a strategic plan for the school. The strategic plan will provide targets and timelines for our ongoing school improvement.
Over the course of the summer another exciting addition will be a new accreditation. We are currently accredited by the National Lutheran School Accreditation. Because of a new reciprocity agreement, we will also be accredited by AdvancEd. AdvanceEd is the “old” Southern Association of Colleges and School (SACS). Broward County Public Schools and most of the non-public schools in our area have the AdvanceEd/SACS accreditation.
We are very encouraged about our enrollment for next year. We currently have 50 students enrolled for next year. Over the past three years, we have enrolled 20, 20, and 15 students from the last day of school until the first day of school. In addition, we generally enroll an additional three or four students during the first week of school. We feel very good about getting to our projected enrollment for next year.
In Christ,
Dr. Dan Czaplewski, Principal

Church budget assumes a negligible growth in stewardship and frozen wages for a second year.
School budget is based on 5 full-time teachers, Pastor Czaplewski continuing to serve as Principal, and 71 students in grades K to 8. Teachers would have their wages frozen for a second year.
Early Childhood income is based on operating near capacity in all age levels.
No summer camp program is budgeted in the Early Childhood division. We will be waiting to determine what opportunities are best when the new gym comes online. Historically, the Summer Camp netted between $10,000 and $15,000 per summer (which is over two fiscal years).
A detailed version of the budget is available upon request.
The Bylaws were amended as follows:
Previous Reading: Each officer shall serve for a term of three years and shall serve no more than two full successive terms in that position without a break of at least one year. The term of office commences immediately following the election.
Current Reading: Each officer shall serve for a term of three years. Every officer, other than the Treasurer, shall serve no more than two full successive terms in that position without a break of at least one year. The term of office commences immediately following the election.

John Knox Village Silver Angel Award
John Knox Village Honors Shepherd of the Coast’s Members
Walt & Virginia Lehr

On May 27, John Knox Village presented their 3rd annual Silver Angel Awards to outstanding, caring seniors in the Pompano Beach and Fort Lauderdale area. Eleven churches in relationship with John Knox Village each nominated seniors from their congregations who have selflessly aided others with their time, talents and efforts.

Walt and Virginia Lehr were honored as Silver Angels from Shepherd of the Coast receiving a beautiful glass award along with a monetary award to recognize their dedication to helping others throughout their lives. Having served in almost every capacity in the church from evangelism to governance boards, they currently volunteer as “office angels” each week. Their community service at Imperial Point Hospital for over 30 years as well as their civil service careers have filled their 69 years of marriage with giving their time, talents and love to those in need.

John Knox Village is a not-for-profit continuing care retirement community in Pompano Beach. Their Silver Angel Award was developed to recognize deserving seniors in the Pompano/Fort Lauderdale community who show a true sense of charity in their dedication to a cause or need that helps others thrive.

Congratulations Walt & Virginia!

A Special Message to the Members of the
Lutheran Church Missouri Synod

In July, elected delegates and visitors will gather in Houston as brothers and sisters in Christ, united as ONE People-Forgiven at the 64th Regular Convention of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. I invite you to be one of the first to participate in a vital, personal way.

Your prayers and support for our beloved Synod are essential. As the decline of Christian influence in our communities is becoming more obvious, it is more important than ever to help people live confidently for Christ and embrace people with His love.

Toward this goal, I am encouraging the greatest gathering of gifts for the mission and ministry of our church that has ever been witnessed through a special National Offering. Sharing Christ’s Love is our offering theme to support the living presence of Christ’s love to everyone, no matter their need or season in life.

Your National Offering gift will be used where needed most in support of our church-wide vision by providing trustworthy resources faithful to the Word and a ministry network accountable for equipping local congregations. Together, we will work vigorously to make known the love of Christ by word and deed in our churches, communities and the world.

Please send your gift today. Make sure your offering is counted among those who faithfully encourage and support Sharing Christ’s Love. May God bless these special gifts as you live confidently for Christ and embrace people with His love.

Yours in Christ,
Rev. Dr. Gerald B. Kieschnick, President, The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod
