March 2010 Newsletter Volume 6, Number 9
Let’s Go Fishing – and Have Fun!
One of the prescriptions from our Transforming Churches Network Report (February 2009) was that we hold six Net Fishing events over the next year. A Net Fishing event is one where we turn our attention toward the community and create a “Gateway” (see the February Newsletter) to Shepherd of the Coast.
I am very excited about the next Net Fishing event on March 13th when we will participate in the Fort Lauderdale St. Patrick’s Day Parade. I think this will be a great Gateway for both our Church and School.
You may be wondering why a Lutheran Church is being represented in a St. Patrick’s Day parade or how a parade could be a Net Fishing event. Aside from American culture being a true melting pot and everyone is Irish for St. Patrick’s Day, there is a good reason for us to be at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The best reason for us to be there is: that’s where the people are!
If we use Christ’s analogy of fishing: you want to throw your line where the fish are. We want to be present where the people are who have not heard our message. The connection between being an outwardly focused Church and the analogy of fishing is clear. But, we may be forgetting one part of the analogy.
If you fish, you probably do it because it is fun. There are a handful of people who make their living from the sea and they may or may not enjoy their work. Most of us, if we go fishing, fish for recreation. If we go fishing, we go to have fun. I think we can have fun when we focus our attention outward as “fishers of men (and women and children).”
So, if you see me walking next to our float in a bunny costume on March 13th; you will know that I’m having fun. If you see Pastor Russ standing on the back of a pickup truck dressed as St. Patrick, you will know that he is having fun. I’m certain that our Cheer and Spirit Squad will be having fun as they ride or walk the parade route. Parades are fun to watch and even more fun to be in.
I am under no illusion that anyone will be “saved” as our float goes down Las Olas Boulevard. But, the Easter eggs we will be handing out to those lining the route will contain candy and an invitation to “follow the Easter Bunny to Easter Sunday services at Shepherd of the Coast.” My prayer is that Easter Sunday will be a bridge and our follow-up efforts will bring people across that bridge to make their spiritual home here. I ask you to make that your prayer as well.
In Christ,
Pastor Dan Czaplewski

Building Program Update
Building Together to Serve
Year 2 – Finish the Job
We are very pleased to announce that nearly all of the Chancel furnishings have been funded. The dedications are listed below. Sanctuary seating and the sound system are the largest remaining items in the sanctuary to be funded by the “furnishings fund.” We are also working on funding the furnishings and equipment for the Family Life Center and new Kitchen. If you have an interest in a dedication, you should contact Mrs. Carol Vermillion in the office as soon as possible.
The second Phase of the project is set to begin soon. We have amended our “Land Swap” agreement with the City of Fort Lauderdale to allow for the demolition of the Lord Building and Teen Tower (old Child Care building) sooner than originally contracted. This will help us get started on the 11,000 square foot addition to the east of our present building. This addition will add the Family Life Center, Kitchen, 1 Classroom, Youth Room, Restrooms, and the new and improved Thrift Shop. At the same time, the “face lift” on the Commercial Boulevard exposure of the building will begin.
The demolition of the chancel area of the sanctuary will also begin soon. The existing wood platform must, by code, be replaced with a concrete platform for fire safety. For a period of time our chancel will be on a temporary stage until the new concrete platform is constructed. In addition, the chandeliers need to be removed to frame in the exposed air conditioning ducts. Temporary lighting is being installed in the sanctuary.
Shepherd of the Coast Christian School
What is in a name? Well, when it’s your name, there is quite a lot in a name. We have for the last five-and-a-half years called that part of our ministry that serves children ages 0 to age 4 our Learning Center. We became aware that this name can have a completely different meaning than the one we intend. Particularly in the Hispanic community (because of how the name translates into Spanish), a Learning Center means a place where students with special needs receive remedial instruction. We have also heard this from some of our “Anglo” families as well (think, for example, of the Sylvan Learning Center).
At the same time, we have always sought to promote a unity between all our full-time educational ministries to children. For that reason, the Church Council has resolved that we are now doing business as Shepherd of the Coast Christian School. Our School has two divisions:
1) The Early Childhood Division that serves infants through Pre-K 4. Mrs. Brenda Sorren is our Early Childhood Director. The Early Childhood Division operates 51 weeks a year and is housed on the first floor of our education wing.
2) The Elementary and Middle School serves children in Kindergarten through Grade 8. Dr. Daniel Czaplewski is currently serving as our Elementary/Middle School Principal. The Elementary and Middle School is housed on the first and second floors of our education wing. Eventually, we will have grades 2-8 on the second floor (where there are 7 classrooms, the library, and computer lab). Fort Lauderdale fire code requires that Kindergarten and First Grade must be on a ground floor.
We believe that this new name conveys our faith-based identity and the kinds of services we provide most clearly to our diverse community. It also clearly indicates the unity of our school ministry as we serve families with children infants through grade 8.
Respectfully Submitted,
Dr. Daniel Czaplewski

Lent
Lent is a season of soul-searching and repentance. It is a season for reflection and taking stock. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism. By observing the forty days of Lent, the individual Christian imitates Jesus’ withdrawal into the wilderness for forty days. All churches that have a continuous history extending before AD 1500 observe Lent.
Because Sunday is the day of the Resurrection, we skip over Sundays when we calculate the length of Lent. Therefore, in the Western Church, Lent always begins on Ash Wednesday, the seventh Wednesday before Easter.
In many countries, the last day before Lent (called Mardi Gras, Shrove Tuesday, Carnival, or Fasching) has become a last fling before the solemnity of Lent. For centuries, it was customary to fast by abstaining from meat during Lent, which is why some people call the festival Carnival, which is Latin for farewell to meat.
All of this allows us to make preparation for the coming glorious celebration of Easter – the resurrection of our Lord. While Lent is often a somber time, it is also a time of anticipation. As we move through Lent, we can feel the excitement grow. We prepare for His resurrection – an awesome and glorious day!
Why is the Gospel read from the Middle of the Congregation?
In the early church Scripture was read at every worship service and the commonest pattern was to have three readings: 1) one from the Old Testament; 2) one from the New Testament epistles or Acts or Revelation; and 3) one from the Gospels. "The reading of the Gospel is the last of the Scripture readings and the climax of the series. In it is seen the presence of Christ the Word of God. In later tradition it was read from a pulpit or ambo, but often today in the middle of the congregation. In moving further back in the history of the church we find that reading the Gospel in the congregation, or on the ‘pavement’ was indeed the ancient practice in the worship service. Just as we have now added the chanting of much of the liturgy, including the Lord’s Prayer, we will take up this practice as well. As we continue to follow more and more the practice suggested in the Lutheran Service Book (LSB), the Pastors will be reading the Gospel lesson during the early or most traditional service.

Pastor Dan Czaplewski from Shepherd of the Coast Lutheran Church in Fort Lauderdale, hands a $1401.00 check to Mission: Haiti on January 21st for Haiti Earthquake Relief efforts, to Pastor Darrell Stuehrenberg, Pastoral Advisor for Mission: Haiti. This was the initial Haiti Relief offering gift from Shepherd of the Coast, he indicated that more was to come!
Early Childhood News,
Brenda Sorren, Director
Looking ahead… the Early Childhood Center is getting ready to send out registration packets for our families. We always give our current families the option to register early. The Early Childhood Center will open registration for the community on March 29, 2010.
In our Early Childhood Center we start with infants who are six weeks old and continue through four years old. We have a great staff of qualified teachers and teacher aids that enjoy working with the little ones.
We ask that you, our families, continue to lift up Shepherd of the Coast School in daily prayer as we continue to “Strive for Excellence” and keep God in the center of all we do.
Tweens Group
We meet the first and third Monday of each month from 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm. We have a youth room in the upstairs school building that serves as our hangout. We have 9 to 10 tweens that enjoy spending time together. They have built their relationships with each other and share what’s happening during their hangout time together. It’s a blessing to see that they are also growing in their faith! If you are on campus at any given day that we have tweens stop in to visit with us!
Children’s Ministry
Our J.A.M. and Kids Church are an inspiration for Shepherd of the Coast. We have an average of 23 children that faithfully attend this worship time. J.A.M. is held during the 9:30am service. We can always use extra helping hands during this time. Our J.A.M. hour is our expanding group of children and extra people would be a blessing to our teachers.
Kids Church is held during the 11:00am service. Our numbers aren’t massive, however we do witness to several children in this service. We run this like our very own “Church”. We light candles, we have song time, we have a lesson, activities and then we close with prayer.
We ask that you, our congregation, our family hold up this ministry in prayer. Through prayer all things are possible, so we ask that you do this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Dear ladies of the Lydia’s Fellowship,
It was so good to see you all over New Years. My family and I were so happy to spend time with you all. I personally was very excited to share the Word of the LORD with you. It was truly a joy to me to get to share with you in worship.
At school we had the Symposia in January. This is always an exciting time on campus because it is full with pastors from all over the country, visiting scholars, and vicars that are back for the week. This year the highlight was two theologians of the ELCA and their understanding of the authority of the Bible. Their understanding is that the Bible and church tradition are on par with each other viewed through the lenses of Gospel reductionism and both are subjugated by current personal human experience. This is how they can have many of the current problem behaviors that they have. In English that means that the Bible is man’s word about God, that is not our understanding rather that the Bible is God’s word to man. This difference allows them to rewrite the Bible to their own agenda
This weekend I went on a class trip to Chicago to visit a Muslim mosque where the Imam was trained in a Lebanese terrorist camp in the 70’s. This little bit of trivia struck terror into all the hearts of us students and our professor who led the trip was visibly shaken when he heard that. We then went to a Buddhist temple and spent the night at an inner-city church. The next day a pastor visited us from the PABLO LCMS missionary program. He was from Lebanon and knew well the Imam that we had visited the day before. He also told us about his church in Chicago that was made up entirely of Muslim converts to Christianity; after that we went to a Hindu temple. This was disturbing. They had statues of wood, stone, and plastic all over and people paid the priest to offer fruit to the statues. After the fruit was offered to the statue the priest would take food to the kitchen downstairs and prepare it; then the people would pay again to get the fruit that contained the power of the statue and eat it to obtain the statue’s power. It was just like Baal worship.
Caleb is walking for short spurts and he is also getting very vocal. He has been saying mama and dada for a long time now, but he uses these terms for everything as catch all expressions but it seems to be that he is getting close to placing labels on objects and formulating speech.
Janine and I are getting to the point that we are starting to get excited about Vicarage, but it is perhaps a little early as it is still four months away. It is time to start to plan as I was given the latest rotation schedule at my field work church and on it there is a service of sending where we bid farewell and God’s speed. We have begun to collect empty boxes and are starting to have the discussions of what gets packed, what gets sold and what gets given away. It will be a big job and it is one that incurs the twinge of nerves in the stomach, but it is all very exciting.
Thank you for all your support and prayers.
God’s Blessings in Christ,
Seminarian Rocco Mallardi

Just as we have now added the chanting of much of the liturgy, including the Lord’s Prayer, we will take up this practice as well. As we continue to follow more and more the practice suggested in the Lutheran Service Book (LSB), the Pastors will be reading the Gospel lesson during the early or most traditional service.

Women of the Word
Do you like to read other people’s mail? How about reading a letter from St. Paul? Women Of the Word offers a wonderful opportunity to study God’s word. We are a group of women who love scripture and enjoy studying it in a warm friendly atmosphere. Women of the Word meet on the third Tuesday of the month at the Barcelona Club House in Pompano Beach. A special invitation is extended to you. Our next meeting will be at 7:00pm on Tuesday, March 16th. Call Marilyn Sagehorn at 954-972-9498 for details.

LWML
LWML is an international organization of the women of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod whose objective is mission and outreach by word and work. Our next meeting is March 13th at10:00am. Then on Saturday, March 27th, at 9:30am we will be making crosses from Palm branches for Palm Sunday and we invite everyone to join us (don’t worry we will show you how).
Support our Troops… The women of Shepherd of the Coast LWML are collecting personal care items for the men and women serving in the United States Military. Men and women serving in the military face times of separation from their families, homes, communities, and churches. A care package can go a long way in helping our chaplains build relationships to spiritually support our service men and women. Your support for our U.S. troops will make a difference! A list of items is located on the communications board in the foyer. Place your donation in the basket marked “Support our Troops”. We will collect items until June 30, 2010. Thank you for your support!

We are planning to hold our next Discovery (new member) Class on Saturday, March 20, 2010. The class will be held from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm; lunch and child care will be provided. Our intent in this class is to introduce individuals to the distinctive teachings of the Lutheran Church so that they can make an informed decision about being a member.
Both Pastors will be teaching the class, which we promise will be “interactive” and provide many opportunities to raise concerns and questions. During lunch we’ll introduce class members and those who are joining Shepherd of the Coast by transfer or profession of faith to some of the ministry leaders of our congregation who can explain opportunities for service here at Shepherd of the Coast.
Please contact the office or one of the Pastors if you are interested in the Discovery Class or if you know someone you would like us to invite to the class.
Sermons on CD of MP3
